| TRAGEDY STRUCK OPAL MINERS AT WEGEL TENA |
May 10TH 2010 We mourn the 7 dead Ethiopian miners who lost their lives in a single accident at the Wegel Tena opal field. Small-scale Ethiopian miners sometimes don’t employ best method and equipment in the mining process. These miners carry out extensive excavations work to locate the precious stone from their respective blocks. |

| EXPLORING OPAL BEARING CLIFFS AT TSEHAY MEWCHA IN WOLLO, WELO, PROVINCE |
Arriving at Tsehay Mewcha ( Sun Gate). 3200m on the Abyssinian high plateau. Not a desert at all!
In mid April 2009, we did our first exploration, descending in the opal bearing Tsehay Mewcha cliffs, in Wollo or Welo province. There, over 100 minors in 2 cooperatives of locals allowed by the government to mine opal were working. An experience! Soon photos. But full info on this volcanic rock opal in next GEM & GEMOLOGY. |

Opals from planet Earth
| Discover precious opals from Ethiopia |
Opals from Mezezo have been well-known for more than 10 years for their amazingly sparkling brown and hydrophane varieties. Other deposits (re)discovered more recently yield precious opals : white, fire, crystal and sometimes black ones, all of exceptional quality. Beside reminding detractors of their unfairness, Ethiopia enters the small circle of countries producing gem opals. |

All IMAGES OF THE SITE ARE DOWNLOADABLE FULL SIZE. Magnificent 24,32 cts wollo opal in pear shape. This famous Mezezo rough has been cut in a gorgeous big gem by J.P. Gier in 2006. Interesting Wollo opal rough! Zoom in a nice parcel of really big Wollo Welo opals that we showed in Tucson.
"TSEHAY MEWCHA" MEANS "SUN GATE" No desert, no "marine" sediments, please stop saying and writing this. This opal comes from igninbrites/rhyolites levels at 2900m in the heart of the Abyssinian high plateau. Only locals have the permit to mine near Tsehay Mewcha. At 20 km from Wegeltena village (Delanta district). The rough comes mainly from 2 places named : Mehal Yeheys and Wuls Zelhon. The 2 cooperatives allowed to work there are : "Development trough cooperation" and "Progress in Due Course". The Ethiopian Ministry of Mines and Energy trained the locals and donated hand tools in January 2009. There are other opal deposits in Ethiopia. Future will bring more surprises. People claiming that Wollo opal is from sedimentary ground do this for commercial purpose... . The Wollo opals are now proofing that good CT opals in volcanic ground are found in Ethiopia. September 2009, Eyassu & Francesco
